夏休みは7月〜9月まで続く。新学期は10月からだ。それまで特にやることがない。学生さんは、就職活動をしたり、クラブ活動をしたり、卒論の準備のしているのだと思う。

少しは来学期の準備をしておかなければいけない。

イギリス言語芸術論で参考文献として上げられている、Victorian Proseを読み始めた。

これはビクトリアリア時代の文人の書き物の一部を一冊の本に纏めたものだ。Charlotte Bronte は男性の名前Currer Bellを使ってJane Eyreを書いたが、その書評をかいたGeorge Henry Lewesに送ったCurrer Bell (Charlotte Bronte)の手紙のいくつかが掲載されている。

BronteはLewesの賞賛、批評に感謝もしているし、反論することは反論している。

でも、私の感激したのは、彼(彼女)の手紙の文章だ。これは文学ではなく、語学に成ってしまうのだが、日常の手紙文で利用出来る文章がいくつかあった。

I beg to assure you that I appreciate fully the intention with which it was written, and I thank you sincerely both for its cheering commendation and valuable advice.

Mr. Williams did well on the whole to tell you I regretted not having sent the note of thanks I wrote, as I am thus afforded the opportunity of repairing that omission.

I am glad you told me my faults plainly in private, for in your public notice you touch on the so lightly, I should perhaps have passed them over thus indicated with too little reflection.
